Two near interceptions and one failed fumble recovery away from a halftime lead. Great effort boys! Have to run the ball better in the second half to keep Princeton off the field.
The last time they were that competitive was when Brackett was QB. I liked the energy, especially from the defense. They held Epperly in check for the most part and when his ego forced passes they were ineffective. The BS first TD, the pushoff in the end zone on the second(?) TD hurt morale.
Racking up yards is a good thing but they were never in a serious scoring situation. Molina is the only playmaker and he wasn't near the end zone all day from what I recall. For all of Nottingham's strengths he makes just as many mistakes. This team overall cannot afford to compensate for any mistakes, penalties, bad breaks and stalled drives. Shaky kicker too. The freshman has a lot of work to do or they need to recruit someone else for next season.
This team has to play perfect to have a chance and that is a real longshot.
As an example of real improvement, the worst team in football last season, Davidson, scored almost 50 points today against Dayton and put up a decent showing against Princeton last week.
Were some strides made today or was it the mysterious mojo that makes Columbia play Princeton well regardless in any given season?
The rain was a HUGE factor today. It rained, and rained, and rained some more. I haven't seen such a soaker of a game since I was at the Yale Bowl in 1992. Ugh. No wonder there were fewer than a thousand people there. (Official count was three thousand, but most ticket holders did not show. The weather was that bad.)
Remember that the Princeton offense, while fun to watch, is not exactly rugged and falls apart the moment the weather turns. See: Dartmouth in the snow last year, which cost the Tigers sole possession of the title. They couldn't get it going today in the rain either.
But the moment the skies cleared, the uptempo play reappeared and passes started connecting. I sat down when it was 3-6. Next thing you knew it was 38-6. So while you can try to differentiate the play of the Lions between the two halves, it was all the same to me. One simply got to play Princeton in the rain and the other didn't.
One other lowlight -- Mangurian himself getting called for a huge foul after a Princeton touchdown. Classy.
Pete was in the right for that penalty. He was upset with the first one the refs missed, calling Epperly over the goal line but it should have been blown dead after he was pushed back. The one Pete was called on was the pushoff by the Prinecton receiver, clearly offensive PI was a great catch though for a TD. Pete had every right to lay into the refs.
Once again we find ourselves outmatched on both sides of the line. Atwater's big runs were right up the gut. Who allows that? Lots of Frosh on the field as well. At what point will Pete be developing "his" players?" Again, you have 18-19 year old boys playing against 21-22 year old men.
I hope that the NHDC is starting to compile names, that is if Diane allows you to... Can SOMEONE on the committee please have a backbone and just admit that you were all wrong? The longer that we allow Pete to be a part of this program, they deeper we sink in to the Ivy abyss for years to come. Cut the ties NOW!!!
But the officiating stank and cost us dearly. The offensive pass interference non-call in the end zone was almost criminal. Look. we were better yesterday. If we had a good receiver Nottingham would have had 250 yards and two TDs.
One of our best players is barely 18. Pace #76 destroyed the big time Princeton recruit Holuba and held him to .5 tackle and no sacks or TFL. Pace also had zero penalties. Thaxton had 2 pass break ups and dropped an interception. He gave up one first down catch. Atwater destroyed our MLB Rea simply put. Molina had 150 yards total offense and was a equal to the pumpkin heads LB Rohan who had several tackles, a sack and was disruptive coming up the middle. It seems like the air came out of our balloon when our reciever #11 Hill got knocked out of the game with a concussion. He's our only speed reciever and was open on every snap when defended by #2. The freshman left guard continues to play decent and it was great talking to Seyi and Mingo at the game. Class acts.
Third week in a row we didn't cover the spread. Even without the bad calls we lose. Still no receiving capability, except Molina. Sorry about Hill's injury and I hope he's OK, but his pass catching was questionable prior to that.
The positive I take away is that while we didn't get a TD, at least we scored twice when NOT in garbage time, and that the first half was competitive. I still have hopes re Cornell and Penn, and maybe even Brown.
Here we go again with Pace being the youngest 18 Y/O in FCS football. I thought that there was a truce here? This kid is so weak it's emarrassing, just ask your friend Seyi. Pace wouldn't start on most JV teams; maybe that's why we don't have one? Having ANY Freshmen on the O-Line is embarrassing. It's simply a maturity (physical/mental) thing. If you can't grasp that, maybe the fact that we haven't scored more than 7 points in any single game will help you. Thaxton would have difficulty covering Stephen Hawking. He's more concerned with celebratory chest bumps on under-thrown balls to wide receivers that anctally making plays.
Danny, you are an empty shill for this Staff and Administration... There is no reason to prolong the inevitable. Get rid of Pete now!
what is with the age thing, still? i watched from 3-3 on and never saw us run to Pace's side. there are no sacks because our qb gets rid of the ball so quickly in order to avoid the sacks. our receivers are god aweful. Nottingham could place the ball in their hands and they would still drop it. we lack so much speed that deep routes never are an option. we got lucky early and that is ok, but we could never put the ball in the endzone. the air came out of the balloon when Princeton stopped putting the ball on the turf and took over.
Pace may have a lot of potential, but our offensive line is terrible. Nottingham was sacked four times and we only gained 27 yards rushing on 28 attempts and 200 yards and change total offense. You can't shine a turd, but some of you guys are doing a good job of rolling it in glitter.
While Danny may err on the side of optimism, I don't believe he is an AD shill. I may not agree with his conclusions but he provides interesting stats.
Yeah, he provides great insight... In fact, as I recall, in the beginning of the year he was telling us how well the team tested pre-season (citing several obscure tests and subjective times). He went on to tell us how strong and fast the team was this year versus last year... So much so that all we saw of Princeton's WRs DB was the name on the back of their jerseys. Our O -Line gets pushed around like wet rag dolls. Conversely, I see how hard our D-line works! it's just that they are too small. The LBs play as far back as opposing DBs. It's just sad.
Thanks Big Dawg and Kenyon Metal. Just trying to provide information regarding the team as I get it. Negativity is not my strong point so I will continue to support the boys and coaches as long as there is a football team at CU. I see lots of improvement but unfortunately it hasn't shown up in the win column. Anybody that says they don't see improvement in such areas as Oline compared to last year are blind. That same person says our QB gets rid of the ball fast! He just won't admit that there is improvement but all I can say is stay negative #1 Lion! How's that working out for you?
Our offense is dismal how is that improvement? Although hard not to improve from last year. Danny is supportive, but every king needs a jester. He has really given us insights like pace is the youngest second year kid in the country, but mot the overall youngest anymore. As the great movie quote kind of goes, it is over Johnny, Rambo the war is over. Amazingly our apple polishers have found new apples to Polish...damn that orchard.
Yes, by all means, let's be positive about this 0-14 streak (and counting)... Here are some examples of the positive things that Pete has done since he arrived...
waiting.... waiting... Nope, still waiting...
The answer is NOTHING! He screwed Brackett during his Senior year. It took Jake's intervention to allow the entire team to dress for home games (Pete actually had seniors who practiced all week in the stands), he got rid of the JV schedule - sure, throw inexperienced boys against men (see Harvard 110+ versus our 0 over just two years), no alums can watch practice (after all, Pete needs to keep that losing formula secret), and the list goes on...
With this track record, would any of you hire Pete in the private sector? I think not; except maybe you, Danny... Your blind loyalty here just means that you are blind! "Wait and see..." is not an answer, it's an excuse!
Pete in the private sector would be an SNL skit. Some guy barking over a cubicle worker's shoulder.
Pete will be fine. He'll catch on as an OL coach somewhere. This wouldn't be the first time a coach took the wrong job and the wrong people hired him into it.
The bigger questions have to be what will the program end up with next? Another hatchet job or will there be a commitment to get it right this time?
As long as the current, incapable selection committee is in charge it will be wrong. As sure as night follows day..or does day follow night? Maybe there is hope

So far, so good. 0 - 0. Tie game.
Of course, this is the night before it starts.
Two near interceptions and one failed fumble recovery away from a halftime lead.

Almost had the lead at halftime, but Tigers catch a break and sneak in a TD with 5 seconds left; 10 - 6 Tigers.
Still too many drops, but not as bad as usual, and Molina is doing a good job receiving. Thank God.
Actually, the first competitive half we've had in a long time.
Epperly never crossed the goal line! We should be put by 3 rather than down by 4. But except for the last drive we are playing well..
Our receivers are awful.. Nottingham is throwing some great balls which are being dropped.
We need a go to wide receiver.

Two words (again): Search Committee...

Our LBs except for Pesanello are too small. So they are vulnerable at the point of attack. 58 is a good speed rusher. Padilla is solid. The rest of the DL gets no push. The DBs need to learn how to play the ball. Epperly is not a good, passé and we should have had several picks. On offense Nottingham has a good arm, Molina is a good back, but we lack receivers both outside and in the slot who can make plays. Ditto no TE play.
"You can't shine a turd, but some of you guys are doing a good job of rolling it in glitter."
Beautiful...I need to remember that one! Thank you for a glimmer of sunshine on a Monday morning!
