Lead Stories/Questions

-One of these two 0-4 teams will finally get into the win column today.

-Columbia faces its first game of this season without senior captain Brett Nottingham even on the team. Will the team look like the wheels have completely come off or put up a decent effort?

Streak Watch

Columbia has now lost 15 games in a row, making this the longest losing streak since the record 44-game slide from 1983-88. Columbia has not won a game since 11/14/2009 or 676 days ago.

The Lions have also now lost 19 games in a row on the road. The last away win was over Cornell at Schoelkopf Field on Nov. 14, 2009. That was  1,799 days ago.

Penn has defeated Columbia 17 straight times, dating back to a 20-19 OT win for the Lions at Franklin Field in October 1996.

Players to Watch

Penn: QB Alex Torgerson is talented, but interception prone. Will he get over his INT problem today? LB Dan Davis is salivating as he assays the CU O-line.

Columbia: Can QB Trevor McDonagh put up good numbers against a first string defense? RB Cameron Molina had his first real quality playing time at Penn in 2012. He was brilliant in limited duty and will get a chance to repeat that.

Columbia 3 Keys to the Game

1)      Wound Penn's confidence with an early score

2)      Don't rely too much on screens

Penn's LB's are very good and will be ready for that strategy. CU needs to try to throw it deep early.

3)      Let McDonagh run a bit

It's the last thing Penn will be expecting.

Don't worry Lion supporters. If you take the first quarter of today's game and the last quarter of the Monmouth game we are getting better in fantasy land.

The longer Pete stays at the helm of this program, the further he tarnishes the image of this great University. Simply put, the Administration at H/Y/P would not put up with this disgrace and national embarrassment!

To the Football committee (wannabe AD Ted Gregory inclusive), we told you last year to get rid of this Clown and you kept him??? Now you have an opportunity to do the right thing get rid of him NOW!!! What in the world are you waiting for? What do you have to lose? You wonder why alums, fans, and parents make fun of you guys? Because your lack of action against this moron is an endorsement of what Pete is doing. You idiots allowed Pete to get rid of the JV program and look where we are today. Wait, I stand corrected, we are fielding a JV program now.

While listening to the game on WKCR this afternoon, they brought up an interesting point… If you look over the Norries years (obviously 2 more than Pete), versus the PM years, and you analyze the top 10 Players from the combined coaches, NONE of them would be PM's recruits. Every recruit he has brought in is mediocre at best. Padilla would be the exception; however, he still wouldn't be in the Top 10. Unfortunately, nor would the youngest 18 y/o in FSB, our left tackle, who has a tendency to hold the opposition when they go by him.

My latest theory: PM will be back next year even if he continues to lose by historic proportions. The excuse will be simple, that the new AD should choose the next HC. The real reason: cheapness. No AD will be named until Murphy leaves, and this inept administration will not want to eat the last year of Pete's contract.

i am sitting here eating lucky charms and thinking Prince Pete must eat them too because no coach this bad would still have a job so he is very lucky.

he is so bad he makes me feel like a japanese citizen in the godzilla movies running for their lives.

somebody do something already, this is just pathetic.

Don't look to Bollinger. The deeply concerned CU board of trustees, led by some gushing Bollywood fan named Schiller, just gave Bolly a four-year extension. Next they'll be making him president-for-life. Eat some more Lucky Charms. We all should.

266 in passing with 2 sacks... 20 yards rushing, really? Can someone please tell me how improved the O-Line is (again)?

As happened with Princeton, CU's opponent was so apathetic and perhaps depressed about a game against Columbia that they began by wishing it would just go away. Unfortunately, after a while they began to play football.

Now comes the winter of our discontent,
But no glorious summer lies beyond,
For Peter the First remains enthroned
By the House of Bollinger,
And Columbia fans remain
in the deep bosom of the Hudson buried.

Start flooding Bollinger with mail. Not emails, but letters.

Harking back to Oldlion's comment, I think the practical problem facing us is that
a)I believe we ate the last year of Norries' deal
b) If PM goes, we then eat the last year of his.
c)Obviously, given the visibility, the new AD would prefer to pick his own guy, BUT
d) DM is hanging out till June, and therefore there will not be time for the new person to do it.
e) UNLESS we find an AD before June, and pay two salaries so that the new AD can fix the FB issue.

But this means that we would have to pay two AD salaries for a number of months, as well as swallow 2 years of fired coaches pay. Does anyone think CU will do that?

I seriously think not, unless a known insider (Ted??) already on the payroll assumes direct responsibility as AD and focuses on FB coach change after the season.

Somehow, I'm sensing an even deeper descent into Hell over the next year or two.

Let us for the moment toss pessimism aside. This team came out ready to play and Penn did not. Penn's defense is not very stable this season, most notably the secondary. The first drive Columbia looked like an actual team.

Then, it was a struggle the rest of the way. The offense racked up 16 penalties. If I heard the (Penn) announcers correct, 14 of those were false starts. What that tells us is McDonagh's lack of practice time with the first team OL really hurt BAD.

Plus, McDonagh does not have good arm strength when on the run or throwing off balance. He has trouble throwing out of bounds on broken pass plays.

There were a few things wrong with the playbook and a few things they started to get right.

Marcus Briscoe took a step in the right direction with his development and Flannery continued to step up and make some nice catches. The TEs were great, especially the freshman Dansby.

Now, they have to get the playbook to work within their strengths. Where they can learn is looking at what Penn did with their motion sets, play action and option. What won this game for them was having 2 athletic QBs (Torgensen and Strouss) who can run. McDonagh does not run well and it makes no sense at all to keep re-using the same long developing plays out of the backfield that teams see on film. You have to mix it up and get creative. By the time Molina is near the line he is dealing with multiple tacklers.

The defense needs a lot of work and an injection of talent. Offensively, some strides but it bears repeating, this team cannot afford to make mistakes. 16 penalties is unacceptable. That was the difference in keeping and losing drives.

The freshman kicker is not working out. Coach him or replace him. The lost points were not a game breaker obviously but if this team is going to compete they need those FGs.

That said, they are not going to beat any remaining Ivy team on their schedule excerpt maybe Cornell who is floundering after a somewhat promising start. If they get Few back at QB they have a chance.

Excellent point and good research..

Dawg, what would that amount to? Norries is long gone, Murphy should already be gone, why should she get a gift of a year's salary? And whatever they're paying Pete is on Murphy too. those three combined probably aren't half what Bollinger makes in one year of his ridiculous four-year extension.

I don't believe it's about money. Bollinger spends more on rose petals for Ahmahdinejad to walk on when he desecrates our campus with his presence.

It's about Bollinger and the trustees telling us to eat something that isn't Lucky Charms.

oldlion said...

Bollinger is as political animal. Another J'accuse in Spectotor would help. Also, do not waste time emailing Bollinger. He will probably feel compelled to answer letters. Also, place calls to Schiller at Boies Schiller and ask to speak with him. Seriously.

The Columbia football head coach position pays 250K. Plus, Pete no doubt gets endorsements from from Gilette for his awesome shaving skills. High end men's fashion retailers have been lined up for a few years now hoping to lure him into a billboard contract.

Big Dawg said...

I estimate (and could be wildly off) that 2 years X coach = 400k and 1 year X AD = 300k, so the bean counters would see it as 600-800K "wasted" on sports in 3 years.

Dawg,

Just as and FYI pretty much all coaching contracts have an "offset" meaning whatever they were owed by CU would be offset by the salary they are currently earning. So do not be fooled there arent as much sunk costs as people believe.

Coach said...

Salary is closer to 400,000.00

Anonymous said...

Whaaat? If that number is true then that is just highway robbery. 250 is bad enough for the job Pete is doing.

Columbia needs to pay $550-$650 to get a real 1AA Head Coach to take over. If you want to pay only $250, you can get some silly assistant coach from the Ivy League. Cough up the money!!

How many football players last year requested a competitive read, and how many came to Columbia. Time for some full disclosure .

Until Columbia offers the best financial aid package in the Ivy League, the football program will go nowhere. The alumni must put the pressure on the administration. Billy Campbell was unbelievably generous by donating the new facility at Baker Field- He is no. 1 super football alum- who will help with financial aid- should it come from other alumni?
