This Says it All

This editorial in today's Columbia Spectator says what needs to be said.

I thank Ed Botwinick for writing it and I hope someone is listening.

That is some serious stuff. Everything is on target. Though I still question who could possibly take over the program at this stage? It is not so simple to hand off to Ray. How would he win the hearts and minds of the players? How would any interim coach? It is also a matter of recruiting AND attrition. We could lose current players because of this. Is it better to have a lame duck head coach hang in there with some semblance of dignity or what else is a solution? Ray Tellier won't make a bit of difference to game planning. That will be mostly deferred to the assistant coaches.

They really botched this. The only real solution is to get aggressive and get a hiring process with the right people doing the interviewing immediately. Even as Pete is still HC, just get it going and find a real staff to put in place immediately after game 10.

Following a dismal loss to Monmouth, Lions QB Brett Nottingham is rumored to have quit the team. These guys just can't catch a break. Updates to follow.

so he has one bad game and he is demoted. let's not forget getting crushed last year and the fact that he has nobody to throw the ball to.
i can feel the confidence being instilled in the players.

To all commentators: Name 2 people that could change the course of the Columbia football program, not including a coach. If we can't identify at least 2 persons, the program will never change.

A couple of points.

First, Ed merely re-states what has been shouted from the rooftops since last year. Possibly it gets some more notice. At the least, it adds to the growing chorus for change.

More importantly, what is the actual status of Nottingham? Is he still playing?

As an FYI, given the DM resignation and PM's continued non-performance, CAEC is also calling for an immediate search for both replacements, as well as the strategic investigation of long term failure, which should begin at the president's office

Nottingham is off the roster. The wheels are fully off when the senior captain quits.

2-Deep out already??! McDonough backed up by Anders Hill, Nottingham gone as we now know. Charlie Flores moves ahead of Markham on O-line. Briscoe ahead of Connors, Denzel Hill returns to back up Flannery. Couple of other changes on D.

Even if Nottingham was not playing well, how could Mangurian publicly slam him in Spec by saying his preparation was inadequate? He could have simply said that we weren't moving the ball and he needed to see if he could give us a spark. So of course Nottingham leaves the team. How could he have done anything else when the coach publicly humiliated him? A new low.

Brett quit because of 6 picks in the past 2 games got him sat for #7. He quit Stanford for us if you remember because he got sat for Hogan. Hate to see him go but it's next man up.

Next man up, Danny?!?! Isn't it the responsibility of the coach to prepare the team? Isn't that what he's paid to do? If a QB throws interceptions, you take him out. It happens to everybody. But how can the coach who's supposed to prepare the team get up in public and passively observe that the QB wasn't prepared, when that was the fault of the coach himself?

I've never ever seen that happen before. If a player goes on the field unprepared, the one who should quit -- or resign, or get canned -- is the coach, because he hasn't done his job.

It's unbelievable that Mangurian has handled it this way, it's incredible that anybody would try to support him, and it's embarrassing that the the university would not react to this happening in one of its most public enterprises. If all that is allowed to go on I don't see how any solution is possible.

Danny, the more you talk the more it becomes clear you are a former player. What is your allegiance to Pete and the RB coach based on? Did they recruit you? Maybe it just hasn't worked for Brett but he wasn't pulled for poor play. He was pulled because the game was out of hand. Any idiot can see that and only a bootlicker would stand behind Pete in casting blame on the guy.

I can't find the spectator article where Pete says Brett was unprepared but I remember reading it. That is a new low for a coach to do that after what that team has been through. I fully expect Pete to cast blame one everyone except himself on his way out the door.

It hasn't worked out for Brett, no shame in leaving. Trevor wants to play. I can see the fire in his eyes standing on the sidelines even through pixelated video. It's his time. Let's see what he can make of the opportunity.

alswingman - You clearly give Danny far too much credit. There is no way he is a former player. His lack of football knowledge is mind-numbing. He cannot be a CC grad either. Admissions would not admit someone that intellectually-challenged in to the school. I wouldn’t be surprised if “he” was actually “she”, and her real name is “Danni”, a Barnard grad.

If Nottingham quits, and who could really blame him, the responsibility lies solely on Pete’s shoulders. Think about it, a CAPTAIN quitting!!! And why? Because our narcissistic coach has to blame some other than himself for these losses. Should Nottingham been benched? Absolutely, but he didn’t deserved to be treated like that in the press by Pete. Pete is a hypocrite! What happened to “keeping issues in-house because we are a family”? Get rid of this Clown NOW!

my guess is Danny is a friend of one of the coaches on the staff. That would explain "his" inability to empathize with the long term frustration many of us have had with the admin.

Danny, are you ever going to answer my questions about Pete alienating us and his newfangled "5 year plan"?

Are these questions unreasonable?

I definitely would expect more from an Ivy grad. I don't know how else to explain someone who claims to hang out on the sidelines and have such visibility into the program that he/she vigorously defends the sinking ship.

Though I have lived in college towns (Stanford included) and nothing shocks me about the behavior of young people.

Could not agree more about the treatment of Brett. He does deserve better.

Guys
I have no idea who Danny is, and I have to say that while a lot of his statements are questionable, I don't think he's a shill or deserving of the personal stuff he gets heaped with.

Re the QB, I again have no idea what went on, but I do know that we finally had a passing game after he sat. Even if it was against the 3rd string. Hell, at this point we need to try anything.

If PM actually hung him out to dry, then shame on PM. If he quit in a fit of pique, shame on him.
Bottom line; after all those picks, something needed to be done.
