BREAKING: COLUMBIA TWO-DEEP RELEASED

And there are some surprises, (click here).

NOT a surprise: Brett Nottingham is the starter at QB, backed up by Trevor McDonagh.

BIG surprise: One of the starting WR's is Ryan Flannery, and two of the backups despite a very deep and experienced WR corps, are freshmen: Cameron Dunn and Denzel Hill. The other starters at WR are Connor Nelligan and Scooter Hollis.

Four freshmen are listed as backups on the OL, Kendall Pace, Justin Aimonetti, Nathan Gibbs and Anthony Bonadies.

On defense, Niko Padilla and Wells Childress are the starters at DT backed up by Chad Washington and JD Hurt.

Two players who had injury-marred 2012 seasons get the starts at DE: Nick Melka and Seyi Adebayo.

Vinny Pugliese and Brian East get the starting LB spots vacated by the graduated Mike Waller and Ryan Murphy. Of course Zach Olinger is starter at MLB.

The secondary went with experience. Seniors Marquel Carter and Jeremy Mingo got the nods at safety, Travis Reim and Malcom Thaxton are the starters at corner.

While six frosh grabbed backup positions on offense, only two first years cracked the two deep on D. They are safety Brock Kenyon and LB Tyler Kwiatkowski

Some other names/things that popped out at me:

-NO return specialists were named

-DE Toba Akinyele getting the backup slot behind Nick Melka.

-Roy Schwartz backing up Adebayo and JD Hurt backing Childress.

-Bruce Grant, just converted from RB/WR, cracking the two deep at corner.

Another tidbit from the game notes is this:

"Every Saturday during the Columbia football season, tune in to “The Answer” 970AM for Columbia Football Today at 7:30 a.m. Host Jerry Recco and Pete Mangurian will preview all the action for the Lions upcoming game."

Nathan Gibbs is also listed as a backup OL. He's the fourth.

any stats showing how often 2-deep obtains during games? injured players have been slotted as starters

Jake, you didn't mention starting OL Marshall Markham, I'd say he's a surprise, must have come on strong at camp. Starting five OL averages 264, backups 270, still lightest in the league by far, but I'll bet they're good, for sure improved over last year. We'll know soon enough.

Eight first years on the second unit is astonishing.

OL is still VERY young. Wait 'til next year..
Just sayin...

PS, no listing for KR and PR. Who is taking Alec Fischer's role on PR? I assume Bell will be one of the KRs?

Good years to come if they continue to get young talent.

Several good Frosh on roster that are not on 2 Deep List..

not a big surprise there are 8 first years on the two deep. Mangurian has a lot of contempt towards Wilson recruits.

Where did poster above get that idea about Mangurian and Wilson? If anything's contemptible it's your post.

Every head coach thinks he is a better recruiter than his predecessor. Big deal. But if a junior or a senior is clearly better than an underclass,an the better player will start. Here we have several seniors, recruited by NW, who are first time starters. That puts the lie to the canard that Pete has contempt toward. NW's recruits.

Also there is a change on two deep @ LB for backup to East

The change indicates to me that there are no ulterior motives to deceive anyone about the starters and backups .
