Moment #11: Martin Pummels Mathews

The Hit

With 4:42 left in the first half and Columbia still tied with Cornell at 7-7, QB Sean Brackett threw a pick that set the Big Red up with the ball at the Lion 32.

But then, the furious Columbia pass rush stepped it up.

After Cornell QB Jeff Mathews threw two straight incomplete passes, Josh Martin barreled across the right side of the Big Red O-line and absolutely slammed Mathews with an eight yard sack that set Mathews’ head wobbling like a bobble head doll.

And with all the pro scouts in attendance that day to watch Mathews, I can't help but think that the hit gave Martin's NFL chances a big boost.

While the sack did not give the Lions the momentum back, its effects never quite wore off for Mathews who was never quite the same after it.

Your photo is of Mathews losing the ball. Was that later in the game?

Yes

I am not sure that the "open practice" this Saturday will be an actual scrimmage ... may be just a practice in pads with some hitting ...

Any news on a bus to Fordham?

Jake, nice use of alliteration. I would have gone with Martin Mauls Mathews, however.

That's a good one!

i realize this may not be the perfect spot given the thread, but why hasnt the football program put anything out there about the passing of SOLO?
We have all discussed it, but i have yet to see anything formal from the athletics department.

Thanks Des, you're 100% right.

It's sad, because if I POSTED a complaint about this lack of acknowledgement, it would sound like I was using Solo's untimely death as an excuse to grind my ax about the poor job being done by the AD. I'm going to be accused of that regardless, but let me say that even I am SHOCKED that nothing has been done to acknowledge this very important Lion's passing. Is it POSSIBLE the Johnson family has asked that nothing be said/published? That's the only reason I can think of.

Jake, this is shameful! I'm embarrassed for the program, the athletic department and the University. Solomon earned the Rookie of the Year (the only one we've had I believe) and scored the winning touchdown to end The Streak. In addition, Solomon came back tor a 5th year to help the program! I realize that we cannot acknowledge every player/athete's passing, but he was special. Now the football and athletic departments will ask for contributions to support their programs. The coaches and administration talk about doing things The "right way", just think about how they reacted here. I may be wrong because I have emotional ties to Solomon, nevertheless, I am very disappointed!

While it's likely someone from the AD reads this blog, it would be more effective to write to Murphy and Mangurian to make sure they know how we all feel.

Jake,

My guess is that no one on the staff reads the blog and may not be aware of Solo's passing. Let' face it Jake, you may not be their favorite guy. Seems that coach M is trying to create a tight knot group of alumni, players and staff. As I see it the blog needs to be more supportive of the staff,

I have personally read correspondence that the Administration and Staff were aware of Solonon's passing, yet they chose not to acknowledge it on the web site because it would break their administratiive protocol. Let's not make excuses for the Staff or Administration, please. They made a conscious decision not to do so and you can make your own judgements...

... And yes, the administration (and coaches) read this Blog.

The irony here is that a simple TWEET would have sufficed for many... Thanks Pete and Diane!!!

Blame Dianne, she has been around long enough to know about Johnson. But cut Pete some slack. He really hasn't been here long enough to have known all of this history.

... But that is what would have made Pete special. Yes, I understand your point oldlion, but I'm sure Pete was aware of Solo's passing and what he meant to CU Football. Also, Tellier could have whispered in Pete's ear that it would be a good idea to acknowledge Solomon. Speaking of which, Ray should have done the right thing too as Assist. Athletic Director!

Regardless of the above, it would have been nice to see the School support one of its own that passed way too early.

Tell me why anyone on the coaching staff would read this blog.

I recall when George Webster died the Michigan State coach made a public statement to the effect that Webster would always be remembered as "a great Spartan." The coach was probably about five years old when Webster played at Michigan State. As Steve Jobs taught, the whole of your product is revealed in every detail.

And I am,

Bravo Miitch! I am sure that we could all cite numerous occassions where Athletic Staff and Administrations did the "right thing". Columbia chose to go in a different dircetion. I assume that (God forbid) when Bill Campbell passes, we'll have to read about it in the San Jose Times?

There is every good reason why the administration should read this blog. It is the difference between learning about CU matters for the Columbia Record (which is biased and put out by the office of communications) or the Spectator which is put out by the students and tells the REAL story. The administration doesnt have to agree with everything said on this blog or necessarily DO anything it suggests, but it must not be afraid of negative criticism if there is a genuine interest in building the best program it can.

The soccer portion of the gocolumbialions.com has a release on the recent death of a soccer player (Tanelli). No need to say that can't mention Solo unless his family does not want it .

Solomon's wife would have (and still would) appreciate a listing because Jennifer Jackson-Strange (former Football Manager) is setting up a 501-C for Solo's family where she can take donations. To the above post here is the link to the Athletics web site under soccer. That coach is a class act...
