BREAKING: Washington Nears Settlement/Dismissal

Based on this legal document, it would appear that junior DL Chad Washington and his lawyers are working on some kind of settlement and dismissal in the racial harassment case against him.

However, I'm not sure what this means for Washington's status at Columbia or on the team... and it's not clear just how close this case really is to adjournment.

I defer to the many legal experts who read this blog to help me sift through the info, but what this really looks like is a standard deal where if Washington keeps himself clean for 6 months or a year, this entire complaint will be wiped away.

Again, what that means for his status on the team is unknown.

will you attend any practices and see if he's there?

We won't need to get into practice to find out if Washington is participating. But there will be an open practice on 9/14.

how will you know about Washington w/o being at practices before 9/14?

that's not the kind of thing you can keep a lid on. Chad is a key player.

This seems to me to be good news.

I'm inclined to say the same. Holding my breath... and I will be holding my breath again in two weeks for the campus reaction.

Adjournments in contemplation of dismissal are very common in the legal system and are used to resolve many different types of minor cases where, in the judgment of the Court, the legal action should be dismissed if the defendant agrees to do whatever the Court requires within a specific period of time. Hate crime statutes in some instances, need to be narrowly construed, so as to avoid conflicting with the constitutional protections of freedom of speech and assembly. Almost any verbal or written statement can be interpreted as hateful. Many terrible anti this or that statements are made on-line in the press and are never criticized or punished. Of course, most crimes involve a physical act, but then very few legal scholars have ever been able to define what exactly amounts to an "assault." If there was indeed an "assault" committed here, that's one thing, but to suggest that a "hate crime" happened is certainly a bit of a stretch.

Incidentally, I am a lawyer and former Columbia student athlete.

I only hope and pray the true facts of the incident are made clear to the faction of the student body that feels it is their prerogative to actively persecute Chad and other athletes on Campus with no knowledge of the details. FACT: Chad was subjected to MUCH worse abuse, bigotry and hate than he dished out in the days that followed the incident by members of your beloved college. There is a putrid stink on campus that permeates the perception of student athletes by many students at Columbia and some administrators and faculty. It is a low priority and afterthought for Valentini and is a profound embarrassment.

That faction of the student body that the prior writer mentioned is undoubtedly overjoyed that Columbia University continues to employ convicted felony murderer, Kathy Boudin, as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Social Work despite the fact that she was directly responsible for one of the most cowardly massacres of innocent citizens ever, namely the Brinks Massacre Murders in Rockland County, New York. In short, it was Kathy Boudin who drove the U-Haul truck in which the armed murderers were hiding after they killed two innocent people at the Nanuet Mall. When the U-Haul Truck was stopped by police at the entrance to the New York State Thruway in Nyack, New York, Killer Kathy failed to tell the police that the armed murderers were hiding in the back of the truck. Due to her incredibly cowardly act, her friends were able to murder in cold blood two innocent policemen. Frankly, I have zero respect for the persons in the Columbia University Administration responsible for hiring and continuing to employ Kathy Boudin. They certainly lack the moral integrity and judgment necessary to judge any student who is accused of a very minor infraction. What every Columbia student and their parents should be asking is why Kathy Boudin is still teaching at Columbia?

The same faction is probably overjoyed that Joseph Massad, the Israel hating phony, got tenure despite the fact that he is notorious on campus for his pro-Hamas sympathies. My assessment of the PC atmosphere on campus is that we are not unique, and that PC has taken over most elite universities. As far as Chad, if the case is disposed of as indicated then he should not be disciplined by the university.

Re Massad-divergent views should be encouraged at a university, and that's not PC. Challenging opinions with which you disagree stimulates the educational process; the absence of ideas opposite of yours leads to closed minds, not to mention boredom.

I read the blog everyday. Great information and topics to be had by all. My son is an incoming freshman football player and I look to you guys to corroborate what he tells me. I often want to publish stuff but he tells me the stuff he discloses to me is not for public consumption.

Cont'd... The Chad Washington case was blown out of proportion and he is innocent. He never touched the guy. Summer workouts were great with 100% freshman participation and 90% returning players in attendance.,

Cont'd... The team will be improved in all phases. The student athletes are pumped and ready to go and have nothing but faith in the coaches. My son is in awe of Brett Nottingham's arm and my son played with a D1 QB going to the ACC/Big 10.
