After Columbia took a 3-0 lead early in the week seven game
vs. Yale, Tyler Varga and the 100% wildcat offense went three and out on its
first possession.
But, apparently that was just some opening game jitters.
With 1:09 left in the 1st quarter, the Elis got
the ball again all the way back at their own six.
But that was nothing for Yale as Varga started to heat up.
Three Varga runs netted 28 yards to get things started, and
then Varga would get his only pass completion of the game, a nice little roll
out flare to Mordecai Cargill for 18 more yards plus a late hit penalty that
gave Yale the ball at the CU 33.
Two plays later, Varga was strolling untouched into the end
zone for a 28 yard score and the Bulldogs now had a 7-3 lead.
Suddenly, the Lions looked like they were falling back on
their heels.

Jake, the dude completed ONE pass and we continued to play a regular defense and we did NOT put 8 men in the box to stop his runs. I remember the pass and it looked more like a shotput than a thrown football. But he can run!
We never did set the edge against Varga. He kept on turning the corner. The only way to play run defense against him is to turn him back inside so the first man can at least slow him down. Once he gets the edge he is a load,
Well, defending the edge has me plenty worried this season with the graduation of Waller and Murphy at LB. We better find out how to do this fast, because Carlton Koonce for Fordham in week 1 is going to tear us a new one down the sidelines if we don't.
The DEs need to set the edge and turn the plays inside so that the LBs and safeties can make the tackle.
