Coming in to the 2012 season, two of the biggest questions
about Columbia’s offense were 1) Could Marcorus
Garrett stay injury free and have a big year? And 2) Is there a good backup
for Garrett on the team?
Garrett indeed did stay healthy last season and he darn near
racked up a 1,000 yard season. As for backups, that question remained somewhat
unanswered. But there were flashes of brilliance here and there.
One of those flashes came late in the 3rd quarter
of the week 5 game against Penn with Columbia now holding a 13-10 lead.
Wanting to give Garrett a rest in the midst of his dominant
performance, the Lion coaches inserted freshman tailback Cameron Molina into the game with the Lions starting a possession
at their own 10.
On a 10-play drive that ended with a blocked 47-yard FG
attempt, Molina rushed the ball three times for a total of 14 yards. The
numbers weren’t spectacular, but Molina looked good earning them, especially
against the tough Penn defense. It certainly gave Columbia fans a charge to see
someone who gave us at least a brief glimmer of what the word “depth” means at
the RB position.
Molina got two more carries later in the game for a decent
total of seven yards.
It seems like Molina really didn’t get a chance to carry the
ball again the rest of the season. He did finish 2012 with 11 carries for 30
yards.
