Moment #30: Safety First

Ryan Murphy applies the pressure

Even though QB Trevor McDonagh’s first-ever turn at leading a Lion possession did not end in an offensive score, it did result in great defensive field position. Paul Delaney’s punt nailed Yale at its own nine yard line with 8:34 left in the half.

Then LB Ryan Murphy took over.

On 1st down, he crashed into the backfield and tackled Mordecai Cargill for a four yard loss back to the five.

On 2nd down, the shotgun snap momentarily eluded Tyler Varga and Murphy was able to bring him down in the end zone for a safety.

It was the first safety scored by the Lions since the 2002 Homecoming game against Princeton, and it made the score closer at 7-5 with 8:13 to play.

Jake,
I thought that the snap was poor; but Murphy was in like a bolt on the play.
